Project Overview

As COVID-19 spread across the United States and throughout the world, federal and state governments ordered shutdowns for the stated purposes of arresting the spread of the virus and/or reducing the strain on healthcare systems. These shutdowns were extremely expansive and in some cases included forbidding religious gatherings, and restricting or even criminalizing speech. Governmental authority do so was and remains nebulous.

Our Involvement

Legal Insurrection Foundation leadership decided to devote some of the time it was saving by not being able to conduct a planned speaking tour, to conducting its first-ever online webinar. The subject: government overreach. The April 26, 2020, event featured LIF founder and president William A. Jacobson, J.D, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Cornell Law School Securities Law Clinic, and LIF senior contributing editor and director of operations and editorial development Kemberlee Kaye.

In his presentation, Prof. Jacobson presciently asserted that the then-current lockdowns were not sustainable, and that social conflict would inevitably result from it. In particular, he noted, “We either move as a society towards a reopening of the economy and easing of restrictions, or society moves toward social conflict and insurrection.” This was slightly over a month before the beginning of rioting that started after George Floyd died, and was glibly attributed to a response to that death.
